Now that the Geeky Tank has been running for a short period, I quickly realised that the sump area in the Cade Reef S2 1500 system was too dim for effective maintenance and monitoring. It’s one of those overlooked spots that you only really notice when you’re fumbling around during a water change or trying to inspect your skimmer in the dark. I needed a clean, non-invasive way to bring light to this space without introducing clutter or tools.
Enter my trusty 3D printer.
I decided to use an LED strip as the lighting source because of its low profile and strong light output. The challenge was how to mount it neatly and securely—without glue, screws, or zip ties. After sketching out a few concepts, I came up with a tool-free clip-on design that could snap onto the sump frame and hold the LED strip firmly in place.

The first print was close, but the grip was too loose and kept falling out. The second version adjusted the tolerances, and everything fit perfectly—secure yet easy to clip on and remove when needed. The design channels the LED strip light outward and keeps wiring tucked away to avoid any mess.

The result is a sump area that’s now well-lit and easy to work in, especially during late-night maintenance. It’s a simple mod, but it makes a huge difference in usability. The design is simple enough to replicate if you have a basic understanding of 3D modeling and printing. Next up will be some sort of motion or contact sensor to toggle the switch when the door is opened or closed.
